TRORA Mourns the Passing of Racing Legend Kay Harrison

It is with deep sadness that the Three Rivers Outboard Racing Association announces the passing of Kay Harrison of Birmingham, Ohio — a distinguished boat racer, engine innovator, and true legend in the sport of outboard racing.

Kay Harrison’s accomplishments on the race course secured his place in racing history. In 1967, he held four world speed records in the one-mile straightaway, including records in A Runabout, B Hydro, and B Runabout. He continued that success in 1970, setting straightaway records in the A Hydroplane and B Runabout classes. His record-setting career reflected not only exceptional skill behind the wheel, but also a deep and lasting commitment to the advancement of the sport.

Kay’s legacy extended far beyond competition. Together with his father, Milford “Millie” Harrison, he played a significant role in the history of racing equipment and engine development. Millie founded Birmingham Metal Products in 1953, and the Harrison family later became well known for importing the famed British Anzani outboard racing engines.

When the British factory ceased production around 1967, Millie and Kay purchased the remaining parts inventory from England. They went on not only to assemble engines themselves, but also to manufacture unavailable components in their Birmingham, Ohio, factory, incorporating their own modifications and improvements. These hybrid engines became widely known throughout racing circles as “Harrisons.”

Kay Harrison was also one of the founding fathers of the U.S. Title Series, helping build what has grown into the nation’s premier PRO outboard racing series since its founding in 1982. Through his achievements as both a racer and engine builder, Kay Harrison left a lasting imprint on boat racing history. His contributions helped define an era of PRO racing and continue to be remembered by competitors, historians, and fans alike.
