Delaware Debut
Staging a boat race at a brand new location can bring both trepidation and triumph. How participants will react to the pit space, parking area, water conditions, how many drivers will show up and course layout are just a few of the myriad of factors that can make any conducting club a bit nervous. The sense of triumph can only occur when racers walk away saying not only did they truly enjoy the experience, but that they will not miss any future events at the newly minted site. Fortunately, for Three Rivers Outboard Racing Association, their new site in Delaware, Ohio met and exceeded all the criteria necessary and was universally praised as a success.
Race Director Mike Marshall worked for more than a year securing the necessary permission and permits required to stage a Stock/Mod/J outboard race at Delaware State Park. His efforts, and those of TRORA and all the volunteers and participants from various Midwestern clubs, were rewarded with two excellent days of racing.
The “Icebreakers Regatta” was the first event on the 2010 Region 6 racing calendar. And, for most drivers, it was the first time they hit the water for the new season. The highlight of the first set of racing was the three boat battle in JH. Defending National Champion and hometown hero Logan Sweeney was poised to show his local fans what hydroplane racing was all about. But fellow competitors Grant Hearn and Colin Smith were not to be outdone. Smith easily won the first heat, but jumped the gun in heat two, giving Sweeney the Saturday win. All three boats battled closely once again Sunday. Smith was once again poised to take a win, but clipped a buoy in heat two. This time, it was Hearn who took the win with Sweeney 2nd. Hearn also won JR both Saturday and Sunday.
CSH proved to be a border war. Three boats from Ohio battled three rigs from Michigan. The 17-M of Andrew Tate took heat one Saturday. With nothing to lose, the three Ohio boys lined up side by side, dropped the hammer at the start and never cracked it. Unfortunately for them, all three jumped the gun. Tate cruised to the win. He was also in position to win on Sunday but mechanical issues popped up while leading the second heat. The 56-S of Jerry Brewster won the heat, but the 15-S of Jesse Ward took the overall win.
It’s not uncommon to see fathers and sons doing battle on the racecourse. But in my 42 years of involvement in the sport, I cannot recall watching a mother and son compete in the same class. Such was the case Sunday in ASH, as Amy Sweeney and Michael Sweeney squared off. Mom clearly had more speed, winning heat one. But the competitive field had Amy thinking, triggering a gun jump in heat two. That opened the door for the 28-M of Tracy Trolian to take the overall win, with veteran Carl Holt 2nd.
Other big winners for the weekend were Dana Holt (20ssH both days and BSR Saturday), Carl Holt (ASR both days), Kevin Besonen (750MH both days and 850MH Sunday) and Mike Affholter (25ssR both days).
This inaugural event was capped off by a fantastic catered dinner Saturday night at the nearby Sweeney home. Everyone got a chance to chat after a long off season, get a glimpse of the shop and the picturesque pond in the backyard (which is really there for breaking in race engines!). The evening was highlighted with a wedding cake in honor of newlyweds Ed and Kelly (Pater) Hearn. Congratulations to you both!
TRORA looks forward to many more years of racing at Delaware State Park. It has all the amenities you could wish for in a race site. Mark it on your calendar for next year and kick off Region 6 racing at one of the finest locations in the country.
