2011 Delware Race Recap
The spirit and determination of midwest Stock, Mod and J racers was put to the test as TRORA kicked off the 2011 racing season in Delaware, Ohio, May 14-15. Battling the other competitors was easy compared to the struggle against Mother Nature. But in the end, the racer’s will won out and the event was successfully completed.
The pits were quickly filled on Friday as teams from Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, New York and Pennsylvania readied their rigs for testing. With the abundant rainfall that has besieged most the midwest this spring, this was the first opportunity many had to get on the water this year. They were greeted by sunny skies and moderate winds which churned up the lake from time to time. Nearly 20 drivers hit the water for valuable test time.
Race day started with more great weather. Nearly 80 drivers were ready to take the first green flag of the Region 6 season. TRORA’s Tom Eynon showed tremendous early season speed in taking the win in CSR. MHRA’s Doug Wellings and Tom Sutherland waged a great battle in 250ccMH. Wellings stole the start and led for 2 laps until Sutherland made a move on the outside of turn one. Wellings caught heavy spray which forced his boat to get out of shape, sending the Michigan driver into Delaware Lake, luckily uninjured.
As the second set began, dark clouds began forming beyond turn one. Referee Jack Brewster kept the program moving to beat the impending storm. Eric Vanover steamed to a win in 750ccMH. The 25ssr/350ccMR combo saw the return of Rick Wagner, Jr. Driving his father’s rig, Skippy looked great after a two year layoff. Look for more of him this season. Rumor has it a new boat may be going on the jig soon as well. TRORA members Jeff Williams and Larry Stenander displayed good speed in their 350 rigs. In the last class of the set, Dana Holt used a good start to best the field of five 20ssH. During that race, a few massive lightning bolts lit up the central Ohio sky. As the boats exited the course, racing was halted for the storm. Everyone had their equipment buttoned up just at the heavy rain and wind hit.
Nearly an hour later, the storm passed and racing resumed. Due to the limited time left on the water, racing was continued on a one heat basis. A great Ohio-Michigan battle was shaping up in CSH. Williams and Ward for the Buckeye state versus Tate, Sidor, Johnston and Miskerik for the Wolverines. With all the boats so close in speed, the start would be the difference maker. Unfortunately, four drivers pushed it too close, jumping the gun. First time Delaware racer Mark Miskerik laid back just enough to stay legal and win the heat, with Tom Johnston taking second. In 500ccMR, Larry Stenander bagged the start and led wire to wire to take the win over Jeff Williams.
With racing complete, teams trucked over to the Sweeney home for a fantastic catered dinner. While rain fell outside, drivers and crew were dry and comfortable inside the Sweeney shop. Kids were treated to boat rides, towed behind Jim’s four wheeler. The evening was capped off by a boat racing tradition, the burning of a boat. This year’s victim was Jim’s 2005 Furnal Flyer DSH. The boat had been severely damaged at the 2010 Nationals in California. Once placed on the fire, it was reduced to ashes in just moments.
Sunday morning brought ominous skies. With the severe threat of heavy rain in the forecast, racing was set for one heat on Sunday. Through the mist, the program was completed by mid afternoon, just as the heavier race began to fall. Amy Sweeney took home the win in ASH, Dana Holt swept the weekend in BSR and 20ssH while Mark Miskerik won again in CSH. Rick Wagner, Sr. drove a great race in CSR. He hounded one of the two Affholter rigs for two laps before making a pass for the lead. But then was surprised by a pass from Sam Pilato on lap three. Look for more good finishes by the
76-S rig this season.
Thanks to all those who braved the elements to make the Delaware race a success. Referees Brian Williams and Jack Brewster, Chief Scorer Shannon Hoover, Risk Managers Jon Brewster and Doug Follett, Inspector Jeff Williams and Mr. Do-It-All, Mike Marshall and his crew for setting the course. We look forward to returning to Delaware in 2012.
